$7.5m Nuriootpa Primary School upgrade opened
A new covered outdoor area and flexible learning spaces feature as part of a $7.5 million upgrade of Nuriootpa Primary School.
Part of the project was the refurbishment of the school’s existing round-shaped building – like a wagon wheel – which accommodates up to eight classes on its outer edges, with the resource centre at the hub.
The upgrade was first announced in 2017 as part of the State Government’s Education Capital Works program and was officially opened today.
“The flexibility that’s been created by this upgrade has been well-received by our teachers who’ve found it really easy to collaborate and team-teach by opening up classrooms and learning spaces,” said Principal Vicky Ireland.
“The glass walls around the library now enclose the space, making it much quieter for students to read.”
“The covered outdoor learning area has had a lot of use; everything from PE lessons and movement breaks to Funky Friday, where we put music on during the lunch break and encourage students to dance.”
The school can now separate the classrooms using retractable glass walls which allow classes to work separately or together, as well as opening out to the outdoor area.
There are also breakout areas to allow students to work in small groups for concentrated learning and peer collaboration.
The project also included upgrades to the school’s main entrance and administration area, providing additional workspaces and meeting rooms.
The school, which was first established in 1977, has about 197 students from Reception to Year 6, as well as 25 staff members.
