Glenunga International High School’s $33.6 million expansion
A new gymnasium and multi-story science and technology building are part of a $33.6 million redevelopment at Glenunga International High School.
Designed by project architect Design Inc and built by Lendlease, the redevelopment consisted of demolition and new works to accommodate up to 2200 students on the Glenunga International High School site and to cater for the year 7 transition into high school.
The redevelopment included a new three-story science and technology building, featuring specialist spaces for science, technology and innovation, as well as serviced learning areas, breakout areas and associated staff preparation areas.
A new double court gymnasium building with a two-story annex accommodating health and physical education spaces, change rooms, serviced learning areas and amenities was also constructed.
Further refurbishment work included the creation of a common plaza and landscaping, and additional car parking spaces.
Glenunga International High School Principal Wendy Johnson AM said replacing our old 20th century woodworking spaces with these wonderful state-of-the-art facilities has enabled our students who are the engineers, architects and designers of the future to experience real world technology that will equip them for the world beyond school.
"Our students were very involved with the interior design and furnishing of our new buildings and as a result have very strong ownership of the buildings even though they are shared with the rest of the school".
"Almost every one of our 2200 students study some form of Science, so the new learning spaces have been an exciting investment in our students’ future".
"Our new gym provides an exciting space for our students to gather as a school community to celebrate important aspects of our culture. Given we often have 10 PE classes on at one time, our new gym and classrooms have been a very welcome addition to our learner experience".
