A new $2 million one-stop-shop resource to help students find emerging career options was unveiled at a maritime high school in Adelaide’s west today.

The State Government is committed to giving students better careers education and information about growth industries so they can understand and pursue opportunities available here in South Australia, including defence and advanced manufacturing.

MyCareerPortal, accessed via the Student Pathways website, helps students to explore career options and make informed choices about their learning and post-school pathways.

It provides:

• Information about key industries, including required VET and higher education pathways and average salaries. This includes a new virtual job experience hub to better understand different industries.
• Easier access to employers to take on work experience opportunities.
• A diagnostic tool to assess personality and learning styles to key careers.
• A new career planning tool to better help students into their desired pathway.

The tool will have a focus on promoting careers in defence such as engineers, coders and cybersecurity or in advanced manufacturing such as electricians, boilermakers and gas fitters, as well as in demand fields such as early childcare, construction or education.

The career portal was launched at Le Fevre High School which has the state’s Maritime STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) specialisation – with Year 10, 11 and 12 courses for students in maritime operations, naval architecture and engineering.

“The MyCareerPortal will be a valuable resource for students to explore a range of career options and enables them to be involved in virtual work experience activities, making it accessible for everyone”, said LeFevre High School Principal Kirri Minnican.

“Virtual and interactive career education is both exciting and worthwhile for students when making decisions for their future”.

MyCareerPortal is also available for students outside of school so that they can share their career exploration, discovery and planning activities with their parents and carers.

MyCareerPortal has been developed for South Australian government schools by online company Year13.
