Whyalla Secondary College officially open
Whyalla Secondary College, a new $100 million school designed to merge the town’s three existing high school campuses has officially opened.
Construction began in 2020 and was completed in November 2021, before the College welcomed its first students in term 1 2022.
With an innovative and contemporary design, the new school can accommodate 1,500 students in years 7 to 12, including 48 places for students with disability.
Featuring a three-story building and multi-level outdoor learning and social spaces, the new school now forms part of an education precinct set between the local campuses of TAFE SA and the University of South Australia.
A double court gymnasium located at the back of the school overlooks the expansive sporting field and courts that can also be used by the Whyalla community, who will also benefit from the 220-seat performing arts theatre.
With about 1,100 tonne of processed steel and 5,815 metre squared of glass that went into the build, the structure took more than 47,000 days worked onsite by a total of 1,296 personnel.
The new school replaced Whyalla’s three former high school campuses – Edward John Eyre High School, Stuart High School and Whyalla High School.
Whyalla Secondary College Principal Tricia Richman said, since we first opened the doors to Whyalla Secondary College in 2022, we have been focused on bringing our school community together to foster a vibrant, contemporary, place of learning.
“Student learning and growth is at the heart of everything we do, supported by our school values of inclusion, innovation and integrity”.
“It’s great to see staff, students and local families come together to celebrate this incredible new school”.
