In December 2013, the former Minister for Education and Child Development, the Hon Jennifer Rankine, announced that the State Government had commissioned an Independent review of government school and preschool governance in South Australia (PDF 342KB).

The Honourable Bronwyn Pike was commissioned to review school and preschool governance and released the report in 2014.

The department gave in-principle support for the report's 14 recommendations and started implementing them at the beginning of 2015.

Background to the independent review

The 2013 Independent Education Inquiry report by the Hon Bruce Debelle AO QC made several key recommendations concerning local governance, including the power and functions of governing councils.
