The Specialist Teacher Workforce Plan provides a new approach for recognising, supporting and growing specialists throughout their careers. It’s aligned to the stages of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
Teachers, leaders and associations gave input to help develop the plan and identify what’s important.

About the plan
The Specialist Teacher Workforce Plan pulls together new and existing approaches that will:
- identify and recognise specialist teachers across our system
- support specialized teachers with curriculum capability building
- strengthen the pipeline of new specialists coming through.
Plan stages
The Workforce Plan will be implemented in stages during 2023 to 2026.
Over the next 3 years the Workforce Plan intends to:
- identify and recognise current specialist teachers through new data capture processes
- provide professional learning and subject specialist networks for teachers to build their expertise and confidence as a specialist
- grow the pipeline of specialists through a range of pre-service teacher supports and pathways.
