The Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) reveals students’ mathematical thinking and what they can do in mathematics.
About the Maths Assessment Interview (MAI)
The MAI is an evidence-based formative assessment tool that assesses critical stages of student development using a framework of growth points.
Each growth point describes progressions in mathematical learning towards mathematical understanding and fluency.
The MAI was developed by the Australian Catholic University and Monash University. It is used in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.
2024 MAI South Australian trial
Some department schools are participating in a trial to assess year 3 and 4 students. This will provide:
- teachers with an efficient way to:
- assess and monitor students’ mathematical understanding
- inform planning and teaching of mathematical learning
- leaders with a rich snapshot of student cohort data.
What the trial involves
Teachers administer the short assessment in a one-to-one interview using prompts and hands-on tasks with students.
The MAI SA will screen:
- year 3 students’ mathematical progress in place value
- year 4 students’ mathematical progress in multiplication and division.
The trial will be supported by Professor Ann Gervasoni of Monash University.
