Athletics (track and field) students with disability carnival

The track and field students with disability carnival is for students with disability in year 7 to 12. Find out more about the event and how to participate here.

Who can participate

To participate in the event

  • schools must be affiliated with School Sport SA.
  • students with disability must be in years 7 or older.

The carnival is not intended for students who have learning difficulties who may be on a Negotiated Curriculum Plan.

Where and when

Tuesday 23 September, 2025

Athletics SA Stadium, 145 Railway Tce, Mile End.

The carnival will start at 10.00am and finish at 2.00pm.

Entry fee

$8.00 inc GST per student. Costs to be confirmed.

No payment is required on the day. A tax invoice will be sent to schools after the event.

There is no cost to enter the venue.

Events and program format

The starting times for each event will be confirmed with schools. These may also be adjusted on the day.

Schools will be allocated to a

  • group for all events
  • lane for all track events.

For the track events

  • students line up behind the cone to identify the lane. For the 400m events this will be on the side of the track.
  • cones will be placed to assist runners in the right direction.
  • the start will be with a voice command.

A lunch break is scheduled for 12.00pm to 12.30pm.


100m

Time

  • 10.00am to 10.30am for groups A and B
  • 10.30am to 11.00am for groups C and D
  • 11.55am to 12.00pm for students with wheelchairs and staff

Format

  • For students to compete against students with similar abilities schools line up their students from fastest to slowest runners.
  • Students can run more than once if time is available.
  • Larger schools can use the spare lanes if needed.

200m

Time

  • 11.00am to 11.30am for groups A and B
  • 11.30am to 12.00pm for groups C and D

Format

  • For students to compete against students with similar abilities schools line up their students from fastest to slowest runners
  • Students can run more than once if time is available.
  • Students don't need to run in their allocated lane as it is a bunched start.

400m

Time

  • 12.30pm to 1.00pm for groups A and B
  • 1.00pm to 1.30pm for groups C and D

Format

  • For students to compete against students with similar abilities schools line up their students from fastest to slowest.
  • 2 students can run per race and can run more than once if time is available
  • Students don't need to run in their allocated lane as it is a bunched start.

6 x 50m shuttle relay

Time

  • 1.30pm to 2.00pm

Format

  • Student will run up and back (shuttle) a distance of approximately 50m each.
  • Teams will need 6 runners.
  • Schools can have as many teams as they need.
  • Combined schools teams can be made.
  • Students line up behind the cone number in front of the grandstand and will be allocated a lane.
  • When the team is called students go to the lane they have been allocated at the finish line. 3 students will stay there and the other 3 will walk to the other end of the relay area when directed

High jump

Time

  • 10.00am to 10.30am for group D
  • 10.30am to 11.00am for group B
  • 11.00am to 11.30am for group C
  • 11.30am to 12.00pm for group A

Format

  • A flexible bar will be used.
  • The bar will be raised if appropriate for the abilities of students and if time is available.
  • It is assumed only small numbers of students will want to participate in this event who have little or no prior experience.

Long jump

Time

  • 10.00am to 10.30pm for group C
  • 10.30am to 11.00am for group A
  • 11.00am to 11.30am for group D
  • 11.30am to 12.00pm for group B

Format

  • 2 jump pits will be used for each group.
  • Students will get as many jumps as possible in the time available.
  • Schools will be allocated an area.
  • Jumps will not be individually measured. Cones spaced 1m apart on the edge of the pit to use as a measurement guide. A tape will be available if needed.
  • Take off boards or mats will not be used.
  • Students will jump from the edge of the pit.

Shot put and javelin

Time

  • 12.30pm to 1.00pm for groups C and D
  • 1.00pm to 1.30pm for groups A and B

Format

  • 8 areas will be used.
  • Throws will not be individually measured. Cones spaced 1m apart on the edge of the throwing area to use as a measurement guide. A tape will be available if needed.
  • All students use the same weight shot put or javelin. Heavier shot puts will be available to try if students would like.
  • Javelins are plastic

How to enter

Schools submit the track and field carnival nomination form by Tuesday 9 September.

Participation ribbons

At the conclusion of each event, students will receive a participation ribbon to add to the learning experience of the day.

Only 1 ribbon for each event will be handed out even if students have multiple turns. There will be different colours for each event.

  • 100m - light green
  • 200m - dark green
  • 400m - orange
  • Long jump - light blue
  • High jump - dark blue
  • Shot put and javelin - red

There are no ribbons for relays.

Supervision of students

The program and format of the day has been set up for the management of students by their own teachers and supervisors.

School staff will be required to help at each event.

At lunch time students can participate in activities such as kicking a football on the grassed area but it is up to the school staff to supervise.
