We’re working closely with the Office for Early Childhood Development (OECD) to plan and implement key early childhood reform initiatives based on the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care.
One of those recommendations is making preschool available to 3-year-olds.
In South Australia, government preschool and kindergarten are the same.
Preschool for 3-year-olds roll-out
Preschools for 3-year-olds is fundamental to achieving the 20-year goal to reduce the rate of South Australian children who are developmentally vulnerable when they start school from 23.8% to 15%.
Preschool for 3-year-olds will be rolled out in government preschools in stages from 2026 to 2032.
The government 3-year-old preschool roll-out will start in regional and remote areas.
Aboriginal children and children in care will retain their existing access to 3-year-old preschool in government preschools.
Search find schools, preschools and other services to find out when a site is switching on. See when your child can start preschool for more information.
Integrated hubs
Integrated hubs will bring preschool and other offerings together so families can be supported to access the services they need in one place.
Twenty integrated hubs will be established across the state, operating in both government and non-government settings.
OECD is currently considering sites suitable for an integrated service hub.
