Schools and preschools listed on this page will close if their Fire Ban District has a forecasted catastrophic fire danger warning. On a catastrophic fire danger day, no people are permitted on these school or preschool grounds. This includes all services that operate on the sites, including (but not limited to):

• OSHC
• Rural Care
• Long Day Care
• children's centres, and children and family centres
• sporting clubs, activity group users and similar
• any other third parties.

Due to the proximity of specific sites being close to a neighbouring fire ban district, those pre-identified sites will also close if that neighbouring fire ban district is declared catastrophic. Those sites will be listed under the actual fire ban district they are located in as well as the neighbouring fire ban district.

Visit bushfire updates and service closures to check if any closures are currently in place.

Check the CFS website to confirm the current fire danger rating in each district.

Bushfire risk ratings

A bushfire ‘risk rating’ is applied to all schools and preschools in designated bushfire-prone areas. The 4 bushfire ‘risk rating’ categories are:

• R1 – extreme to very high risk
• R2 – high risk
• R3 – medium to low risk
• NR – negligible risk.

Schools and preschools are listed on this page because they have been identified as R1 or R2 risk rated site.

Some R3 or NR schools or preschools in close proximity to an R1 or R2 school or preschool will also be directed to close. These sites are determined to have an elevated bushfire risk on catastrophic fire danger days due to their proximity to a higher risk school.
