Who can participate

To participate in the event

  • schools must be affiliated with School Sport SA.
  • year 4 to 6 athletes must trial for their district team.
  • year 7 to 12 athletes compete for their school.

Age is taken on 31 December in the year of competition. For example, a student turning

In cross country, 13 year old athletes in primary school can compete at their local Sapsasa district event. If they wish to compete at the Cross Country Championship their school must nominate them as a 13 year old to compete with the 13 year olds on the day. Contact your district convenor for attendance and supervision on the day.

12 year olds in year 7 participation

Course maps

Team managers and athletes should be familiar with the course. View the course map. (PDF 220 KB)

What is classification for students with disabilities

Classification exists in sport to support as fair competition as possible amongst athletes with different disabilities.

By grouping athletes with similar levels of functional ability into classes for competition, the outcomes of the competition become based on performance rather than on differences in their disabilities.

Students who do not fit into one of these categories may not be able to be classified.

  • Physical or functional
  • Vision impairment
  • Intellectual
  • Deaf
  • Transplant

Classification is coordinated by Athletics SA and must be organised 60 days prior to competing. See classification by Athletics SA for further details and how to get classified.

Catering

There will be various food outlets providing a range of food and drinks.

Rules of the competition

Competitors and team conditions

Age is taken on 31 December in the year of competition. For example 10 years events is for students turning 10 years old in the year of the competition. Athletes in

  • year 4 to 6 must compete in the event according to their age.
  • year 7 to 12 students typically compete in their age but may choose to run in a race for older athletes so their is enough athletes to make up a team.

Athletes can only compete in 1 event on the day.

Listening devices

Athletes are not permitted to use an earphones whilst competing.

Year 4 to 6 Sapsasa district teams and qualifying times

Each Sapsasa district may enter a maximum of 6 runners per event. Events are for trained athletes who can run the following times or better

AgeDistanceQualifying time
10 years old 2000m 10 min 30 sec
11 years old 3000m 15 min 30 sec
12 years old 3000m 15 min 30 sec

Year 7 to 12 school entries

For year 7 to 12 school teams there are no maximum number of entries. All events are for trained runners.

Team composition

The first 4 runners (except in open age and under 16 girls where only 3 runners form a team) to finish are considered the team members for the purposes related to team trophies and medal winners.

The winning team is decided by adding up the placings gained by each school's first four (three) place getters. The lowest total number wins.

If there is a tie the winner is decided on the position of the last scoring team member to finish

Electronic timing

Athletes are required to wear a bib number pinned to the front of their athletics singlet or t-shirt.

These will be collected on arrival at the venue by a team manager and returned prior to leaving on the day.

An additional $15.00 including GST will be charged for replacement of bib numbers if not returned at the end of the event.

Marshalling

Athletes assemble in the marshalling area 20 minutes prior to the starting time of their event. An announcement will be made as a reminder.

The start

  • Athletes line up in their teams with the fastest runner on the start line and others in order behind. Fastest runners will then lead the large fields onto the course.
  • A short whistle will blast 1 minute before the start time to alert athletes to be ready for the starter's call.
  • Starting time command will be "competitors take your marks".
  • Starter will blow a siren.

The finish

Once passed the finish line, the top 20 finishers will be handed state team try out information. The top 3 will then be presented with their medals. All other athletes can exit finish area immediately. Bibs need to be returned on the day.

Clothing and footwear

Athletes must wear a school/district top.

Spikes are permitted in events for runners who are in 13 years and older.

Protests

Must be made in writing by the team manager from the athlete's district or school and handed to the event convenor within 10 minutes of the first competitor completing the race. The protest will then be brought to the attention of the chief referee for a decision.

Protests usually arise from competitors not completing the course correctly or failure by course marshals to supervise competitors properly.

Competitors must follow the marked course. Any deviation will result in disqualification. The onus is on competitors to be familiar with the course.

Sports medicine

Sports medicine personnel will be in attendance to deal with medical emergencies that arise during the event.  They are not there to manage or strap any pre-existing injuries.

Duty of care

Each district and school team are to ensure supervisions ratios are met according to the Camps and Excursions Policy and Procedures.

The team supervisor is asked to

  • clearly communicate a designated meeting place at the venue and set up a base area.
  • have a large sign so that students can find your school / district.
  • always know the whereabouts of your students.
  • tidy your area before leaving.

Awards and presentations

  • Primary athletes may be competing against secondary athletes for all medals in the 12 years age group.
