This page explains the opportunities available for South Australian school students to act as an official at School Sport SA events and how to register their interest.
What opportunities are available
School Sport SA offers students in South Australian schools an opportunity to be a student official in a variety of sports and events.
We are committed to supporting the development of umpires, referees, coaches and officials by providing events for students to officiate at in a safe and supportive environment.
Local carnivals
Participate as a student official at
- Day carnivals.
- State carnivals and championships.
School Sport Australia championships
Students have an opportunity to participate as a student official at some School Sport Australia championships. Students will require certain levels of qualification to be considered to attend.
Subsidies are available for students to assist with costs involved. Parents/caregivers must organise and pay for their child's accommodation, transport and meals.
Attendance requires principal approval.
What are the benefits
For officiating at a School Sport SA event, students will
- develop their knowledge and confidence to officiate games effectively.
- have a pathway to a formal accreditation and future opportunities.
Officiating can form part of their learning program at school.
- SACE State 1 credits in Self-Directed Community Learning
- Part of Work Experience or Personal Development of the General Capabilities (PDP).
- Specific SACE subjects such as Integrated Learning.
- Development of the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities.

School Sport SA will work with schools, districts, zones and regions to support umpire, referee and coaching opportunities at events.
