Tailored Learning

On this page

Tailored Learning has replaced Flexible Learning Options (FLO).

Tailored Learning supports young people who have disengaged from school or who have poor attendance at school and may be experiencing:

  • anxiety and depression
  • unstable accommodation
  • family complexities
  • pregnancy, parenting or young carers

If eligible, young people will:

  • be supported by a qualified case manager/youth worker
  • develop a plan for increased engagement in learning
  • access a variety of learning opportunities..

Tailored Learning supports young people through a wrap around support approach to address their personal barriers. The aim of Tailored Learning support is for the student to reengage with their learning in a location that best suits their needs.

Suitability for Tailored Learning support

Suitability for inclusion in Tailored Learning depends on the level of support a student needs. In addition, students are eligible for Tailored Learning if they are:

  • enrolled in a SA government school
  • in years 8 to 12+.
  • not attending school due to multiple complex personal barriers

Learning locations can vary and may include a dedicated facility at school, an offsite school managed site, a community site, TAFESA or other registered training organisations (RTOs) or online.

Contact your school to discuss your circumstances and the options available.

Expectations of students

Young people are expected to:

  • regularly connect with their case manager/youth worker
  • participate in case management sessions to address personal barriers to learning
  • engage in wellbeing and learning programs
  • attend their negotiated weekly timetable which is likely to be part time initially to support the reengagement process.

Tailored Learning and transition plan

All students who are accessing Tailored Learning support will work with a case manager/youth worker to develop a plan of personalised goals based on their needs, skills, personal barriers and interests.

This plan is called Success through Learning, Engagement and Futures (SELF). The SELF plan outlines the young person’s negotiated timetable, goals and learning pathways. There are a range of other areas such as wellbeing, work experience, volunteering, referring to other agencies and services, vocational learning and transition to employment.

Case managers may be employed through the school or a non-government organisation.
