Permanent teaching positions
Teachers appointed to permanent teaching positions have ongoing tenure.
Eligibility and application
Permanent teaching positions are advertised on Edujobs and are open to:
- permanent teachers who are in at least their 2nd year of an ongoing appointment
- temporary teachers who meet teacher employment requirements and registration
- graduates in their final year of their teaching qualification who can meet minimum requirements for employment before commencing the appointment.
Temporary (contract) teaching positions
Temporary (contract) teaching positions can be from 20 working days up to 24 months.
Schools and preschools may fill temporary positions by:
- matching their vacancy with applicant information on the employable teacher register (ETR)
- advertising positions on Edujobs.
Eligibility and application
Temporary teachers
To be eligible for employment you need to:
- register on the ETR
- meet the minimum requirements
- have your authority to teach letter.
You can apply for advertised temporary positions but you can’t start work until you meet all minimum requirements for employment and have received your authority to teach letter.
Permanent teachers
You can apply for advertised country temporary positions of greater than 6 months to 12 months, if you are:
- in a metropolitan school or preschool
- not in your first year of permanency.
Temporary relief teaching
Temporary relief teachers receive great work flexibility and variety by filling in for absent teachers and providing extra support in schools and preschools on a daily and casual basis.
Retired permanent teachers, who have finalised their resignation and superannuation requirements, can seek work as a relief teacher.
Eligibility and application
To be eligible for temporary relief teaching employment you need to:
- register on the ETR
- meet the minimum requirements
- have your authority to teach letter.
You can’t start work until you have met all minimum requirements for employment and received your authority to teach letter.
Find relief teaching work
To get work as a relief teacher you can:
- introduce yourself to schools and preschools where you would like to teach. The schools will contact you directly when they need a relief teacher. You must provide a copy of your authority to teach letter to each school or preschool before you can work.
- register with temporary relief teacher (TRT) cluster schemes. The TRT schemes will contact you directly when they have work for you. You must provide a copy of your authority to teach letter to each TRT scheme you register with before you can work.
Long-term relief teaching in country schools – Pathways to Employment program
The Pathways to Employment program is for qualified teachers interested in full-time relief teaching in country schools.
The program aims to improve country school’s access to relief teachers by offering full time temporary relief teaching positions in hard to staff regions.
Positions are for up to 1 year and the program offers many benefits to teachers, including:
- the security of up to one year guaranteed full time work
- 5% salary loading
- access to housing
- financial relocation support
- professional development opportunities
- mentoring opportunities
- eligibility for contract teaching positions within the same region.
Eligibility and application
All qualified teachers who are not in a permanent teaching role can apply. This includes early career teachers and new teaching graduates.
Positions in Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Kadina and Berri are advertised on Edujobs. More areas may be available in future.
Positions are advertised either:
- late in the year for positions starting at the beginning of the next school year
- throughout the year for positions where an existing relief teacher is moving into a temporary contract role.
Principal, preschool director and school-based leadership positions
Leadership positions can vary from between 4 weeks to 7 years. The length of tenure depends on the type of leadership vacancy.
