Working with Children Checks for OSHC staff and volunteers

On this page

Relevant history screening requirements must be undertaken for current and future non-teaching employees and volunteers, including students on practicum placements.

Each school governing council is responsible for making sure the requirements are undertaken.

Children must never be left alone with volunteers or visitors.

Accepted clearances

The only acceptable clearance for new non-teaching employees and volunteers, and for those renewing their clearance, is a Department of Human Services (DHS) working with children check (WWCC). A teacher registration certificate issued after 1st July 2019 must also hold a current DHS WWCC to be cleared for OSHC in government schools.

For more information on the DHS WWCC and how to apply see the relevant history screening webpage.

Exceptions

Relevant history screening checks are not required for:

  • one-off guest presentations such as guest speakers or concert performers
  • attendance at one-off events such as sports days, working bees and whole of school/service events.

See the screening and suitability – child safety procedure (PDF 196 KB) for more details.
