Do you feel part of the crowd or do you feel alone in the crowd? 'Assembly', a collaboration between Chunky Move and Victorian Opera, explores these ideas through dance, choral music and sound.
Structure and features
In this resource you can see aspects of the work, which reflect the ways crowds move and act. The work was devised by then artistic director of Chunky Move, Gideon Obarzanek, in partnership with conductor Richard Gill of Victorian Opera. The resource includes a video clip and a transcript of the audio description. These can be used to promote reflection and response as well as to inspire choreography.
For students
- Watch the clip as many times as needed.
- Write or record a response to the choreography considering:
- the use of dynamics, gesture and space
- the numbers of dancers and how they are arranged and move
- the use of music and silence
- the use of set and lighting to communicate meaning
- Explain the messages communicated in the work, referring to sections you have viewed in the clip to explain your comments.
- Find out more about “Chunky Move” and the work they produce and perform.
- Create your own short dance work by interpreting the words of the transcript OR based on your interpretation of loneliness and acceptance.
