Costuming for theatre

Performances are ethereal but once finished, costumes are a tangible textile that provide material evidence. Students will explore the role and construction of costumes for theatre, with specific examples of costumes from various productions performed in Adelaide.

Structure and features

Costumes speak very loudly. They tell us about the production, the character, the actor, and the style of their designer. Costumes in the collection come from the following productions:

  • 'Boy from Oz' (years 7 and 8)
  • 'Oedipus the King' (years 7 and 8)
  • 'Twelfth Night' (or 'What You Will') (year 9)
  • 'Pygmalion' (year 9)
  • 'The Seagull' (year 10)
  • 'The Sound of Music' (year 10)

Each costume piece includes:

  • images
  • information about the production, artist and/or the character who wore the costume
  • information about how it was constructed by the costume designer
  • responding questions
  • making activities
  • resource links where relevant.
