Designosaurs: make, create and perform with puppets

Become a ‘designosaur’. Learn about local threatened species through contemporary Australian puppetry. Raise awareness about endangered species through research, construction and improvisation. Then, go on a collaborative journey to design, construct and bring to life your own animal puppet.

Structure and features

There are 5 lessons in this resource with a duration of 45 minutes each. These lessons are supported by short videos and activity instructions:

  1. Research.
  2. Design challenge: design a puppet animal.
  3. Creature creation: make a puppet animal using recycled materials.
  4. It's alive: learn about puppetry and practice to bring animal puppets to life.
  5. Endangered animal zoo: create a performance.

The inquiry-based project integrates visual and performing arts, humanities, social sciences and literacy.

 

Teacher notes

All templates and information are included in the resource. Teachers may need adapt some sections of the lessons to suit online communication strategies or a single student environment, however the majority of the unit can be used as is written.

The lesson sequence is aligned to the Australian curriculum Visual Arts and Drama. This lesson sequence is part of the Artslive website which features numerous resources for the teaching and learning in the all 5 areas of the arts. A number of the resources are free, and more are available through a subscription.
