Explore film production with 'Girl Asleep'

Go on an interactive journey into Windmill Theatre's film 'Girl Asleep'. Learn about the story’s characters and the production roles involved in every aspect of the film, from actor and director to costume designer, editor and producer.

Structure and features

The resource includes an opening page, an interactive exploration of the set, cast and crew of the film and Maiah’s journey, a narrated series of clips and information with quiz questions. Teenage actor Maiah Stewardson narrates her journey in the film with a series of clips and quiz questions which explore each of the different roles on a film set.

For students

  1. Watch the images on the opening page of the interactive journey. Read the text and consider the title of the film. Brainstorm your predictions of what the film is all about, giving reasons for your predictions.
  2. Select 'Explore the set of Girl Asleep on your own' by hovering the mouse on each of the figures to find out more about them.
  3. Select 'Follow Maiah’s journey and discover your role' by clicking through the series of clips and interviews to discover information about all members of the cast and crew. Answer the quiz questions about each role to discover the role that would suit you best. (about 15 minutes)
  4. In writing, or by recording a video or audio response, describe the role the quiz identified as suiting you best and explain why you think you would or would not be suited to this role.
  5. In writing, or by recording a video or audio response, describe a second role on a film set and explain why you would be suited to this role.

 

Teacher notes

This interactive resource is best suited to years 7 and 8.

Students can work through the resource independently and then reflect on their findings.

The resource addresses the responding strand of Australian Curriculum Drama and Media Arts, however could be used to inspire creative development in different production roles to address the making strand.

Students do not have to watch the film 'Girl Asleep' to engage in this learning.
