Learn music theory online with AMEB

The Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) is Australia's leading provider of examinations for music, speech and drama. AMEB is currently providing free online Theory of Music courses to students. These courses complement the students' classroom and continued learning in music.

Structure and features

These engaging and interactive courses allow students to learn music theory at their own pace. Students can choose to work from Grade 1 to 3. 

Grade 1

Topics include musical notation, chords and intervals, melodies, and major scales.

Grade 2

Topics include triplets and compound meters, major and minor intervals, musical forms, minor scales and key signatures, and terms for musical signs.

Grade 3

Topics include major and minor scales, primary triads, perfect and plagal cadences, rondo form, writing melody, and compound triple time.

For students

  • Register using the step-by-step guide.
  • Independently navigate each course, using the suggested sequence of a series of video lessons.
  • Take the suggested accompanying tests for each lesson. 
  • Each lesson can be reviewed as many times as needed. 

 

Teacher notes

These series of courses align with the Australian Curriculum. Each lesson has a downloadable PDF containing an outline of the lesson content. These will be free until June 30.
