'School of Rock' education pack

This downloadable resource is designed for secondary students and teachers of music, drama, English (poetry), design and technology (textiles), and creative arts. Students in years 5 – 10 can participate in a range of activities, ranging from beginner to advanced music options.

Structure and features

The resource presents a broad range of information in a stimulating way. Students don't need to see the show to engage in the content or do the activities. Students could access the film if they want to, but it isn't essential for accessing this learning.

Resource contents

The resource consists of the following sections:

  • introduction
  • pre-production – information about the storyline, characters, writer and composer
  • from screen to stage – the difference between the film and the stage show, information about rock and roll, the instruments and the performers
  • post production – activities to create your own music, songwriting techniques, lyrics, vocabulary and review writing tips
  • further information – wellbeing initiatives and careers in the arts.

Teacher notes

Australian Curriculum

  • Strands – the resource aligns to the responding and making strands.
  • The resource is very accessible to students, however, teachers should guide students to specific sections of the resource with specific learning outcomes in mind.
  • There are a number of opportunities for students to create their own songs, arrangements, reviews or posters. These could be shared with peers for feedback as well as refined and submitted to the teacher.
