'Amy and Louis' by Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood

This is a unit of work from Reading Australia based on the picture book ‘Amy and Louis’ by Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood. The unit focuses on narrative structure, plot, visual conventions and sentence structure (circumstances) while exploring themes of change, friendship, moving and separation.

Structure and features

The unit of work is sequential. It involves:

  1. Exploring the text context – connecting to characters before, during and after reading; exploring the theme of friendship.
  2. Responding to the text – comprehending the text by looking closely at the images and how they change as the story progresses.
  3. Examining language patterns – looking at text structure and clause patterns, with a focus on language that represents where the actions were happening.
  4. Creating text – creating visuals to represent 3 stages of the story.

For teachers

Most activities need teacher direction but could be adapted to a shorter unit at home with family support.
