The Daily CAFÉ: reading at home

Would you like your child to read by themselves for 30 minutes?

If your child can work out words by sounding out letters and blending them into words, then this video series will help you teach your child to read independently.

Remember, every day is a reading day!

Structure and features

For students and families

This video series will help your child learn to read for up to 30 minutes by themselves.

This can free up some uninterrupted time for you as a parent or carer.

For teachers

Teachers will also find this video series valuable. Some teachers will have used these techniques in their own classrooms as part of their reading program.

Students need to have learned their decoding skills to extend the time to 30 minutes. Reception to year 2 students can learn to sit and focus on a book for shorter periods. The time can be extended as they master the English alphabet.

  • Watch the parent/carer video by yourself. In 5 minutes, Gail Boushey will explain how to use the 8 videos designed for your child.
  • Gather books for your child to read. There is a link to free online reading materials, you may need to provide your email address.
  • Watch the videos with your child over several days and also be prepared to model reading by yourself.
  • Each video teaches new skills each time.
  • Your child can benefit by developing independent reading skills and a larger vocabulary.
