A unit of work from Reading Australia based on the picture book ‘Flood’ by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. This unit focuses on the creation of haiku poems. The themes are community and natural disaster, connection to place.
Structure and features
The unit of work is sequential. It involves:
- Exploring the text – predicting what the text might be about and making a personal connection to it, learning about floods.
- Responding to the text – understanding the text through responding to figurative language and making connections with heroes in the story.
- Examining language patterns – looking at structure and descriptive language in haiku poems.
- Creating text – using imagery from the text to inspire descriptive writing.
For teachers
Most activities need teacher direction but could be adapted into a shorter unit at home with family support.
