How to build stories - ABC Education

Sometimes students just don't know where to start when asked to write a story. This digibook has short videos to support a step by step approach to creating stories.

Structure and features

Stories can be complex things, full of emotion, depth, themes, and new ideas. But, like castles, cakes and cars, if you have all the right parts, they're not too hard to create. In this digibook, Matt from Sydney Story Factory will show you how to build your own stories, using tricks to create exciting characters, plots, settings, genres and language. This digibook has chapters such as:

  • what is a story?
  • creating characters for your story
  • understanding story plots
  • exploring the genre and setting of your story
  • using language to flavour your story
  • giving your story a heart.

For teachers

This resource can be used to help students to understand the purpose of stories and how language devices can be used to engage an audience.
