'This is a library of resources for kids, families, teachers, and librarians to make sure that reading and learning can happen anywhere.' — Kate Messner's website

Structure and features

Learning tasks

Children’s author and former teacher Kate Messner collects resources and materials that can be used for learning anywhere. Her website is Read, Wonder and Learn. It has children’s picture books that include:

  • informative texts
  • narrative texts
  • persuasive texts
  • poetry texts.

For the read-alouds students can learn about plotting, characterisation, other narrative conventions and what writing looks like in different genres.

The read-alouds include information like:

  • writing prompts
  • tips and tricks for illustration
  • using children’s books to respond to students’ issues, scientific, historical and technological contexts
  • models for educators and students to create their own read-alouds
  • problem-solving for topics, such as justice.

Who can use these?

  • Teachers can use read-alouds as they are or they can modify them as needed.
  • Families can use the materials to guide younger learners.
  • Middle primary and junior secondary students can manage read alouds independently.
  • Senior students, in negotiation with their teacher, can use materials as prompts for complex, independent text productions and studies.
