Rights and responsibilities

The Australian Human Rights Commission provides a range of resources for students to explore children’s rights, human rights and the associated responsibilities. Explore information about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, human rights, and our responsibility as respectful citizens.

Structure and features

For students

The student section includes the video, 'What are children’s rights'. This video explains the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and shows how promoting and protecting these rights is everyone’s responsibility.

For teachers

The teacher section provides videos including:

  • 'The story of our rights and freedoms': this video is designed to assist students in building a critical understanding of human rights and responsibilities, and to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills to apply human rights in everyday life.
  • 'An introduction to human rights and responsibilities': this video provides students with the opportunity to explore the meaning of ‘rights’ and develop an understanding of human rights, and the responsibilities that complement them.

Learning opportunities

This topic provides opportunities for students to explore:

  • the meaning of rights
  • the difference between needs and wants
  • their responsibility as a respectful citizen.

 

Teacher notes

The Australian Human Rights Commission’s teacher site includes a search filter by year level, topic and resource type. It is suitable for years 5 to 12.
