Sport in Australian culture

Students will investigate and challenge their thinking to draw new conclusions about the role of sport in Australian culture and history.

Structure and features

Students explore the following modules to explore the changing ways that Australians play and understand sport:

  • the Commonwealth Games
  • women in sport
  • First Nations People in sport
  • migration
  • sporting heroes.

The resource contains a video interview with two Australian Commonwealth Games athletes. There are also examples of a practical application of the concepts, creating a campaign and researching a sporting hero.

This resource is aligned to the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education for Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students.

  • Australian Curriculum – movement and physical activity.
  • Band 7/8 – Participate in and investigate cultural and historical significance of a range of physical activities (ACPMP085).
  • Band 9/10 – Examine the role physical activity, outdoor recreation and sport play in the lives of Australians and investigate how this has changed over time (ACPMP104).
