ANZAC Day

‘Families magazine’ has a range of ANZAC Day age-appropriate tasks. The tasks will lay the foundations for understanding, empathy and respect relating to ANZAC Day.

Structure and features

The Families Magazine website contains factual information, picture book videos for viewing, recipes and art ideas - ANZAC Day facts for kids.

  • Students start by discussing what they already know about ANZAC Day and any questions they have.
  • Read the ‘ANZAC Day facts for primary kids’ section (some will need adult help and discussion).
  • Young students can record some ANZAC Day facts using their art skills and further research.
  • These might answer questions including:
    • why ANZAC Day is a special Australian holiday
    • what ANZAC stands for
    • the traditions and symbolism of ANZAC Day and why they are important. (Note: we use the term ‘commemorate’ and not ‘celebrate’).
  • Visit ANZAC Day activities for kids.
  • How to make ANZAC Day red poppies
  • A recipe to make ANZAC Day biscuits
  • There are excellent picture books about ANZAC Day with themes suitable for young readers including:
    • ‘Meet The ANZACS’ by Claire Saxby
    • ‘ANZAC Ted’ by Belinda Landsberry
    • ‘ANZAC Biscuits’ by Phil Cummings
    • ‘ANZAC Puppy’ by Peter Millett and Trish Bowles
    • ‘My Grandad Marches on ANZAC Day’ by Catriona Hoy.
  • Choose one or two picture books to read. You may be able to find video versions of these books by putting the book title with 'YouTube' or 'video' into a search engine.

This website also provides information for adults on talking about war with toddlers and young students and the importance of explaining traditions and symbolism.
