For students and families

  1. This democracy fact sheet introduces the idea of democracy and explores the key principles of Australia’s democratic system of government. It explains democracy and a democratic society - Democracy fact sheet.
  2. The first video further supports students to understand what democracy is. It looks at why Australians vote at elections which are compulsory for citizens over 18 years old - Behind the news video 'What is democracy? 
  3. The second video introduces students to the starting point of democracy. The 1297 Magna Carta laid the foundation for parliament and constitutional governments, along with concepts of greater justice and fairness for citizens in a democratic country - Behind the News video 'Magna Carta'.

  1. Start with their present definition and understanding of democracy.
  2. Connect with the fact sheet Democracy.
  3. View the first video to record a more comprehensive definition of democracy - Behind the news video 'What is democracy?
  4. Google definitions for democracy might help at this point.
  5. Students can connect with the second video for a historical connection - Behind the News video 'Magna Carta'.
  6. Return to the fact sheet to engage with the 4 key values or ideas that support Australia’s democracy. Students may need to research these values further to improve their understanding - Democracy.
  7. Produce a 1-page fact sheet using their own words and symbols to demonstrate their present understanding of Australia’s democracy and the supporting key ideas.
  8. Record their new learning as a reflection.
