Behind the News is a locally made ABC news broadcast programme targeted at students aged 8 to 13 years. Behind the News (more commonly known as BTN) helps students to understand current affairs, news stories and social issues.
Structure and features
The BTN website contains a library of short videos and supporting material. These can be used to develop or establish a students understanding of topics currently in the news. Families and students can explore news stories that use current language, trendy music and elements of youth culture. Content is organised by subject matter, and there is a search that can be used for specific topics of interest.
The BTN website:
- provides information about specific and contemporary new events and current affairs
- is in a student-friendly format that explains ideas at an age-appropriate level
- links ideas and stories to bigger picture situations
- can be used to introduce or support a current topic of study.
For teachers
BTN gives students access to contemporary issues in a friendly and palatable format. Many stories are supported with transcripts, teacher support material (downloadable documents) and related links to further research and extended student learning. Teachers can use the stories to support issues or topics covered in HASS, including:
- history
- civics and citizenship
- geography
- economics and business.
These resources can be used to introduce topics to students or to prompt debate and discussion about contemporary or historical issues that have local, regional, national and global contexts.
