Geography of North America compared to Australia

This age-appropriate site can be used by students to explore the main geographical features of the continents of North America and Australia. Students can select a country and are presented with easy-to-read geographical facts. The fun facts section provides more information and data in under the categories of geography, continents, oceans, food, flags, passports, landmarks and oceans.

Structure and features

On the Kids world travel guide website, Australia and 5 of the countries of North America (Barbados, Canada, Cuba, Mexico and USA) can be researched. This can build on to what students already know and understand. Games, fun facts and travel tips sections provide further information about the countries and the continent being researched.

For teachers

  • Australia is part of the continent called Oceania.
  • Students can locate and organise geographical information and data to compare the countries in Oceania and North America.
  • This comparative study can compare the geographical features of population, size or area, climate, environments, cities, capitals and landscapes.
  • Other features may be compared: neighbours, first peoples, capitals, currency, flags, tourist attractions, food, native plants and animals.
  • Students’ research may be expanded by accessing other websites or print materials.
  • Students may be directed to plan, draft and edit an information report or other genre in English or represent their learning using a digital text that uses their own words.
  • Assessment with success criteria is to be planned for student learning.
