The Gold Rush

What was life like on the Australian goldfields?

Play the National Museum of Australia gold rush game at least twice and choose to be a different character each time.

What can you learn about life on the Goldfields each time you play?

Structure and features

Instruct students to:

  1. Play the Gold Rush Game as 2 different characters.
  2. Take some notes as you go.
  3. When you are finished, compare the 2 characters in the attached Venn diagram.
  4. Consider the following areas to compare:
    • Opportunities- what opportunities were there to earn a living?
    • Challenges- what challenges did they face at this time?
  5. Name the characters you are comparing at the top of each circle.
  6. Record their opportunities and challenges in the circles - the similarities in the middle and their differences outside.
  7. Write a short reflection about playing the game:
    • What did you learn?
    • What surprised you?
    • What did you already know?
