Gathering a collection of images of different environments will help students to draw comparisons between those environments.
Structure and features
Students can:
- Use Google search to find the first 20 images of:
- where the student lives
- rural South Australia
- beaches or children at the beach in South Australia.
- Identify features of rural and urban landscapes past and present. They may need to add 'Past’ to the Google search for historic images of rural and urban scenes.
Students can make either a print or digital comparison of the features of urban and rural (country) places. This can be where they live, where they have visited or places they have seen in images. Start with what the student knows and then use the google image searches to add rural and urban features.
- Print recording might look like illustrations with labels.
- Digital might be a copy and paste with labels.
Students will benefit from discussing similarities and differences between rural and urban landscapes before writing a short recount of about 3-5 sentences for:
- my place
- me in a city or town
- me in the country.
Writing is only required if the student has experienced being in an urban or country landscape. Feedback can be provided when the student shares recount writing with an adult or older family member.
Natural, managed and constructed features
With support, students might categorise landscape features with an N, M or C for natural (hills, rivers), managed (gardens, farms) or constructed (roads, homes). These terms will need to be described by an adult or older family member.
