Structure and features

Students can:

  1. Access the picture book video for listening and reading - 'My Special Place' video.

  2. ‘Special Places’ is a geography video which provides visuals of special places for family, Aboriginal people and other people in the community. It provides opportunities for students to reflect on their personal places and the reasons why they are special - ‘Special Places’ video.

Students can read and listen to Dana Meachen Rau’s 'My Special Place' video and may wish to repeat it. This is an opportunity to talk about the book and highlight the main ideas. It can prompt interesting personal reflections. After talking about a personal special place, students can do a personal drawing or mini picture book with writing to match the story.

The ‘Special Places’ video should help to broaden the student's understanding of places which are special to groups of people or individuals. It can also prompt the student to think about possible reasons why these places are special.

The student can finish by producing a print or digital text with 5 or more representations of personal special places, along with a reason why each is special.
