This resource from Consumer Affairs Victoria deals with students as consumers. One specific activity looks at the difference between needs and wants. Our needs and wants are unlimited but the resources available to satisfy these wants are limited. Students can explore how the community defines, classifies and uses goods and services.
Structure and features
- Open the 'Consumer stuff for kids' document.
- Go to Unit 1 Activity 2 ‘Needs and wants’ (on pages 14 to 17).
- This activity has:
- teacher notes
- pre-learning, during learning, and post-learning details
- a ‘My country’s needs and wants’ sheet
- an excellent home activity where students look at a family food receipt and identify personal 'needs' and 'wants' for each of the items purchased.
For teachers
- Start with the students prior learning and their present understanding of needs and wants.
- Students may have questions which can be researched using other resources.
- Be clear about assessment support and requirements.
- A Venn diagram comparison may be useful.
