What were the significant events in Australia's history? This resource from the National Museum of Australian charts those events on a timeline.

Structure and features

Get students to:

  1. Explore the Defining Moments in Australian History timeline.
  2. Select 2 or 3 events to compare:
    • year 5 students choose event prior to 1900, year 6 students choose events after 1900.
  3. Use the Significant events worksheet to take notes on each event, then compare those events.
  4. This uses GREAT to help you define which is the most significant:
    • Groundbreaking
    • Remembered
    • Effects that are far-reaching
    • Affect on the future
    • Terrific or terrifying.
  5. Which do you think is the most significant event in Australia's History (or in the time period you are studying)? 
  6. Justify your decision.
