The ‘Australians together’ website provides several video and written accounts of the challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people since European settlement. The stories are engaging and are supported with images and video from the time as well as interviews with those affected. The topics covered include the stolen generation, stolen wages, discrimination, intervention and colonial attitudes.
Structure and features
The 'Stories and experiences' resource provides:
- several short and engaging videos
- accessible text and a navigable website
- links and opportunities for extended research.
The videos are very well produced and extremely engaging, providing personal experiences in a really effective way. They deal with issues such as the stolen generation, stolen wages, discrimination, government interventions and colonial attitudes.
For teachers
This website provides several opportunities to examine ideas around human rights, law and Australia’s recent history. The resources contain useful information for students who are learning about and examining the challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (such as discrimination and racism). The resources could be embedded within a study of the trauma created by European settlement. This study could include the impact on traditional practices and the particular government programs and popular public attitudes that were discriminatory.
Teacher notes
This resource can be used by teachers to plan learning within the ‘History’ and ‘Civics and citizenship’ strands for years 7 to 10.
