Teaching resources - how Australia’s Parliament and democracy works

These units of work by the Parliamentary Education Office (PEO)provide teachers with a valuable teaching resource. The PEO is a federal government website that provides an excellent collection of teacher resources that can be used to deliver or develop units of work for years 5 to 10 for the 'civics and citizenship' learning area within the Australian Curriculum. Unit plans are provided for each year level with supporting documents and videos included within the same site. Teachers can use recommendations and instructions to deliver skills and content.

Access the Parliamentary Education Office teacher resources.

This resource provides:

  • clear and concise instructions for teachers delivering a Civics and Citizenship unit
  • flexibility to adjust units to suit the needs of your learners
  • well supported with an easily navigable interface
  • several videos, worksheets, infographics and diagrams that support student learning.

For teachers

Units are divided into year levels as well as into individual lesson plans with hyperlinks to more detailed explanations making delivery clear and concise. Teachers are also provided with learning outcomes and formal and informal assessment, and these can be shaped to the needs of particular learners. The support material provided is well produced and palatable to the year level it is directed at and aligned to the Australian Curriculum.  The teacher is afforded the opportunity to customise the resources by using them independently to differentiate for their learners. This site is a ‘one stop shop’ for teachers unfamiliar with this content or teachers exploring alternative methods to deliver key content and skills.
