Why are some events special and how do we know?
Watch this short clip on celebrating a new baby and compare it to other special events in your life.
Structure and features
- Before watching the clip, discuss the following:
- Can you remember having a new baby in your family?
- Have you ever visited a friend's new baby?
- What things do people do to welcome a new baby?
- How do families celebrate when a baby arrives?
- Watch the ABC clip Celebrating a New Baby.
- How do people celebrate the arrival of a new baby?
- What gifts do you see in the mother's room at the hospital?
- Why do people celebrate their birthday every year?
- How does your family celebrate birthdays?
- Look at some cards or photos from your own birthdays. What do you notice?
- Draw a picture of a birthday celebration in one of the circles on the special events Venn diagram. Label the important things that signify that it is a birthday celebration.
- Some people don't celebrate birthdays. If you don't celebrate birthdays, think about the events that you and your family celebrate. Why are they special to you? Draw a picture of that special event in one of the circles.
- Now think of another special event.
Draw a picture of that event in the other circle. - What do you notice about the two events? How are they similar? (consider decorations, gifts, people, music, food, costume or clothes).
- Write or draw the similarities in the middle of the two circles.
