Why are some events special and how do we know?

Why are some events special and how do we know?

Watch this short clip on celebrating a new baby and compare it to other special events in your life.

Structure and features

  1. Before watching the clip, discuss the following:
    • Can you remember having a new baby in your family?
    • Have you ever visited a friend's new baby?
    • What things do people do to welcome a new baby?
    • How do families celebrate when a baby arrives?
  2. Watch the ABC clip Celebrating a New Baby.
    • How do people celebrate the arrival of a new baby?
    • What gifts do you see in the mother's room at the hospital?
    • Why do people celebrate their birthday every year?
    • How does your family celebrate birthdays?
    • Look at some cards or photos from your own birthdays. What do you notice?
  3. Draw a picture of a birthday celebration in one of the circles on the special events Venn diagram.  Label the important things that signify that it is a birthday celebration.
  4. Some people don't celebrate birthdays. If you don't celebrate birthdays, think about the events that you and your family celebrate. Why are they special to you? Draw a picture of that special event in one of the circles.
  5. Now think of another special event.
Draw a picture of that event in the other circle.
  6. What do you notice about the two events?  How are they similar? (consider decorations, gifts, people, music, food, costume or clothes).
  7. Write or draw the similarities in the middle of the two circles.
