This project aims to provide 50 words in every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language in Australia. Currently over 40 languages are represented across Australia, and each word entry has an audio recording to demonstrate correct pronunciation.
Structure and features
Get students to access the 50 Words website.
Students can explore the similarities and differences between Australian languages through the dynamic language map. The same 50 words are presented for each language. There is also an option for students to listen to the same word (eg. 'hand') in each language. Students can find more information on individual languages via links to the AUSTLANG or First Languages Australia websites.
For teachers
This website is a useful resource for students studying Aboriginal languages or exploring the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross-curriculum priority. Teachers can encourage students to explore a language in depth through the word list and information found on the AUSTLANG website, or they can prompt students to explore similarities across languages.
