Introduction to Auslan with Can:Do Classroom

'Can:Do Classroom' is an interactive program that supports students to explore Auslan in the broader context of hearing health and protection, social inclusion and disability, and communication. The website includes resources for teachers, students and families aligned to the Australian Curriculum.  

Structure and features

Students and teachers will need to complete a free registration to access 'Can:Do Classroom'. The website is organised into sections for teachers, students and parents, and explores 3 focus areas:

  • hearing health and protection - 4 lessons
  • communication - 3 lessons, including introduction to Auslan
  • social inclusion and disability - 3 lessons.

The students' section includes interactive activities, videos and demonstrations of Auslan.

The website also includes a link to Can:Do Classroom's YouTube channel in which students can learn:

  • basic words in Auslan
  • how to sing 'Home among the gumtrees' and 'We are Australian'
  • Auslan numbers
  • fingerspelling in Auslan.

For teachers

Teachers can access comprehensive lesson plans aligned to the Australian Curriculum in a range of subject areas including languages (Auslan), health and PE, and technologies.
