YouTube Kids provides a huge range of media for children to explore independently in a range of languages that can easily be accessed through the search function. Languages include Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Modern Greek, Spanish and Vietnamese.
The app includes curated selections of content, parental control features, and filtering of videos deemed inappropriate viewing by students aged 12 and under.
Please note that as this is an American app, when searching for Auslan materials it provides content for ASL (American Sign Language).
Structure and features
Adults will be required to set up accounts for their child or children and select the age range for the content they can access. Content categories include:
- preschool - ages 4 and under
- younger - ages 5 to 7
- older - ages 8 to12
- approve own content.
Typing the target language into the search bar will bring up a range of videos both in and about the target language.
Provide specific search terms for younger students to practice listening. For example, search for 'German Peppa Pig' to watch episodes of the popular children's show in German, or 'Vietnamese Frozen' to watch Vietnamese versions of the songs from the movie Frozen.
