Learn endangered Aboriginal languages online

This online language portal is developed for Aboriginal communities, by Aboriginal communities with the assistance of Adelaide Uni's Mobile Language Team. Study Adnyamathanha, Arabana, Nukunu, Wangkangurru or Yankunytjatjara.

These lessons have been developed in partnership with speakers, learners and linguists, to reflect the wants and needs of the community. For all Aboriginal languages, and particularly those considered endangered, it is important that they remain under the control of their communities. Students, families and teachers must view these resources with great care and respect.

Structure and features

Within the 'Mobile Language Team online portal', content within each language varies as each one is in a different state of revival or maintenance. Content is divided into lessons including:

  • greetings and introductions
  • sounds and spelling
  • family words
  • body parts
  • language at home.

Lessons provide word and sentence examples, many with audio to support pronunciation.

For teachers

General and language-specific information about South Australia's Aboriginal languages can be found at the 'Mobile Language Team - Languages' page, which provides a valuable starting point for any student investigating or learning Aboriginal languages. Aboriginal students are encouraged to explore their heritage languages through topics such as kinship and Country.
