This is a digital object that generates data. It simulates a matchbox-packing machine and counts how many matches there are in a sample of matchboxes. Students then make boxplots to analyse the results.
Structure and features
Open the link and follow the instructions on the screen.
You will see simulation of a matchbox-packing machine. Your task is to check if there is an acceptable number of matches (40 to 60) in the matchboxes:
- Take a sample of 100 matchboxes and make a boxplot to analyse the results.
- Sort the sample data into 4 equal groups. Identify the range, median, first and third quartile values.
- Use the evidence you get to support your conclusions.
- Practise building more boxplots and checking more samples.
