Data analysis

Students in year 9 will have the opportunity to learn about data analysis. The unit topics are; data collection display and interpretation, mean/median/mode and standard deviation.

Each of the three units have structured lessons that are designed for a virtual classroom.

The lesson ideas are able to be printed from the NSW Learning from home webpage or sent to students directly. The sequence of lessons uses resources such as BOM, Excel, Maths is fun, Transum, Geogebra and youtube.

The website contains a suggested teaching cycle with links to appropriate virtual resources.

 

Teacher notes

Students follow a process of collecting data, displaying the data and finally interpreting the data. Mean, median, mode and interquartile range is addressed.

The resource also allow the opportunity for introducing students to the concept and meaning of standard deviation.

Students could also be given steps on how to calculate standard deviation using a scientific calculator.
