Geometric reasoning (year 8)

This resource is a series of learning activities relating to the Australian Curriculum Mathematics substrand year 8 'geometric reasoning'. The activities are designed to build conceptual understanding and include problem solving opportunities relevant to this content. This booklet is from a series of maths booklets (conceptual narratives) covering every substrand from years 8 to 10A.

Structure and features

This booklet includes strategies to engage students with geometric reasoning such as following the stimulating works of Vi Hart and James Nizam. Vi is an artist, musician and mathematician. Her doodling in mathematics fascinates students with her rapid speech, skillful sketching and unusual explorations into questions such as ‘Is SpongeBob SquarePants’ home really a pineapple?’. James Nizam is an artist who has created intriguing stacking sculptures but also some interesting geometric light sculptures.

Teacher notes

The activities in the 'From Tell to Ask' section can be used by teachers to support students to make sense of the concepts in geometric reasoning. The problem solving section has rich problem solving tasks that build mastery in these concepts.
