Measurement and geometry

A series of measurement videos presented by a classroom teacher to support teachers and families.

Structure and features

A classroom teacher presents videos on measurement for the following topics:

  • perimeter of polygons and converting length units
  • circumference of circles and perimeter of sectors
  • area units and conversions. Finding the area of squares rectangles and triangles
  • area of quadrilaterals
  • area of circles, sectors and ellipses
  • area of composite shapes
  • approximating area of irregular shapes
  • approximating the area of irregular shapes using the Simpson's Rule
  • surface area of polyhedrons
  • surface area of cylinders, cones and spheres
  • volume units, volume of prisms and cylinders
  • volume of cones, pyramids and spheres
  • capacity units and capacity.

Teacher notes

This is an ordered sequence of measurement videos. Students can revisit earlier videos if they need to recall prerequisite knowledge. Pythagoras Theorem is not explicitly part of this series but is often woven into problem solving in measurement. A learning video series on Pythagoras Theorem is available on this website.

Perimeter of polygons and converting length units

  • Find the perimeter
  • What is a polygon
  • Convert length units
  • Perimeter of irregular shapes.

Circumference of circles and perimeter of sectors

  • Features of a circle
  • What is Pi (𝜋)
  • Circumference of a circle
  • Perimeter of a sector
  • Perimeter of irregular shapes.

Area units and conversions. Finding the area of squares rectangles and triangles

Area of quadrilaterals

  • Area of parallelograms, trapezia, rhombi and kites.

  • Estimate area using approximation.

Approximating the area of irregular shapes using the Simpson's Rule

  • Estimate the area of irregular shapes using the Simpson’s rule
  • This Simpson’s Rule is derived using integral calculus, which is beyond the scope of the video.
