National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics

National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) is a recognised website that provides mathematics information and learning tasks. These tasks are based on the UK mathematics progressions but align well to the Australian Curriculum. It has ideas for teaching concepts, and is supported by vocabulary, key idea lists and lists of possible misconceptions.

Structure and features

This website contains teacher resources to design learning activities in all strands.

The links below are for reception to year 2 and are on the following topics:

  • cardinality and counting
  • composition
  • comparisons
  • patterns
  • shape and space
  • measures.

Teacher notes

This resource is designed specifically for teachers that are designing learning activities for their program in line with the content descriptors. It is not a ready made worksheet but rather provides ideas on how to develop a concept in mathematics.

The links above take teachers to the general page. Teachers then need to click on the sections embedded to find the activities, opportunities and possible misconceptions.

It would require some set up to create the activity but they are worthwhile learning task suggestions.
