Songs and stories in Aboriginal languages

These are quick and simple songs, games or videos using Aboriginal language or about Aboriginal culture. Families can use this with young children. This will help build language skills at home.

For families

This is for families who want to know how to start singing in a second language — Singing in a second language: activity for children 0 to 6 years.

Here are links to short videos for playing games, listening to stories or singing songs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

The first 3 show Kaurna language. Kaurna is pronounced 'garna'.

Listen to the story of Gubuluk told in Big Thap Creole/Yumplatok with English subtitles by Anne Gela. Anne is a Mualgal woman from the St Paul community of Moa Island in the Torres Strait group of islands.

If families would like more Aboriginal stories and songs they can visit Little Yarns on the ABC. There are lots of stories to listen to.

For teachers

Here are stories and songs you can share with families to help develop Aboriginal language and literacy skills for families. Singing and storytelling in their home language is important for children from Aboriginal families. It helps the child's literacy development. Learning another language also helps brain development in all children.
